The best time to visit Costa Rica is during the dry season (December to April), when you’ll enjoy the most sunshine and ideal conditions for beaches and outdoor activities. The green season (May to November) offers lush scenery, fewer crowds and lower prices, with rain typically falling in the afternoons.

What is the local currency and can I use my credit card?
The official currency of Costa Rica is the Costa Rican Colón (CRC). Credit and debit cards, particularly Visa and Mastercard, are widely accepted in hotels, restaurants and tourist areas. We recommend carrying some colones for local markets and rural areas. US dollars are often accepted in tourist zones, but change is typically given in colones.
Do I need a visa to visit?

Are there any compulsory required vaccinations or health certificates?
You only need a yellow fever vaccination certificate if you are arriving from, or have recently travelled through, a country where yellow fever is present. Travellers coming directly from the UK or most of Europe do not need this. No other vaccines or health certificates are compulsory, though routine and travel‑related vaccinations are recommended.
Is Costa Rica safe for solo and female travellers?
Yes. Costa Rica is generally safe for solo and female travellers, especially in popular tourist areas such as San José, Monteverde, Arenal, and the coastal regions. Avoid poorly lit or isolated areas at night, keep belongings secure, and stay aware of your surroundings. Petty crime like pickpocketing can occur, but violent crime against tourists is rare.
