Guatemala FAQ

What is the local currency and can I use my credit card?

The local currency in Guatemala is the Guatemalan Quetzal (GTQ). Credit and debit cards are widely accepted in major hotels, restaurants, and shops in cities and tourist areas. In smaller towns, rural areas, and local markets, cash is often preferred, so it’s a good idea to carry some quetzales with you.

Do I need a visa to visit?

Citizens from many countries, including the UK, EU nations, the USA, Canada, and Australia, do not require a visa for short tourist stays of up to 90 days. Travellers from other countries may need to apply for a visa in advance. It’s always best to check the official Guatemalan government or embassy website for your specific requirements before travelling.

Are there any compulsory required vaccinations or health certificates?

Guatemala does not require any compulsory vaccinations for most travellers. A yellow fever vaccination is required if you are arriving from a country where yellow fever is present.

Is Guatemala safe for solo and female travellers?

Guatemala can be safe for solo and female travellers if standard precautions are taken. Tourist areas like Antigua, Lake Atitlán, and Guatemala City’s main districts are generally safe during the day, but petty crime such as pickpocketing can occur. Travellers are advised to avoid poorly lit streets at night, use trusted transport, and keep valuables secure. Rural areas and border regions may be less predictable, so planning ahead and staying informed about local conditions helps ensure a safer trip.
